After a home renovation, the last thing you want is a garage full of leftover boxes and materials. For this Cleveland Heights homeowner, packaging from new flooring, a toilet, and kitchen updates had piled up alongside stored items she no longer wanted.

She had hired Colin Can Help for other work in the past and reached out for our junk removal services with a straightforward goal: haul away the unwanted material so she could use her garage again.

At the end of October, we removed approximately six cubic yards of material in three trailer loads, cleared the remaining loose floor debris, and gave her back usable garage space. The project took about three hours total and cost $500.

The Project at a Glance

  • Location: Cleveland Heights, Ohio
  • Service: Garage cleanout and renovation debris removal
  • Material removed: Leftover renovation packaging, material scraps, and unwanted stored items
  • Volume: Approximately six cubic yards across three trailer loads
  • Time: About three hours total
  • Project price: $500
  • Scheduling: Quoted Monday and completed Thursday

The Problem: Renovation Leftovers Had Taken Over the Garage

Another contractor had completed the homeowner’s flooring, toilet replacement, and kitchen updates. Although the improvements inside the house were finished, the garage still held leftover packaging and material from the work.

Combined with older belongings she no longer wanted to store, those renovation leftovers were keeping her from making use of the space.

This was not a demolition project or a complete removal of everything in the garage. The homeowner wanted to keep her lawn and garden supplies. Our job was to remove the unwanted material while leaving those useful items behind.

From Monday’s Quote to Thursday’s Cleanout

We quoted the cleanout on Monday and scheduled the work for Thursday. That gave the homeowner a few days to separate the items she wanted removed from the lawn and garden equipment she wanted to keep.

Having those decisions made before loading helped keep the work straightforward. When we arrived, the unwanted material was accessible and ready to go.

We could also back the trailer directly up to the garage. There were no repeated trips up and down stairs or long carries through the house, and the material was light enough for one person to load safely.

If you are planning a similar project but are still deciding what to keep, our article on how junk removal services can help you declutter provides a starting point before scheduling the haul-away.

Why We Used Three Trailer Loads Instead of a Dumpster

We hauled away approximately six cubic yards of unwanted material over three trailer loads, taking everything removed to the dump for disposal.

For this particular job, trailer hauling made more sense than bringing in a roll-off dumpster. The roll-off option we considered started at 10 cubic yards and would have increased the project cost significantly.

With the material accessible and manageable for one person, three smaller loads were the more economical approach for this cleanout.

That decision was specific to this project. More material, heavier items, or a different property layout could call for another plan. The goal is to match the hauling method to the work rather than force every cleanout into the same setup.

What Went Into the $500 Price?

The $500 price covered loading, hauling, disposal, and the final clearing of loose floor debris. Several details shaped the quote:

  • Easy access: We could back directly up to the garage, reducing carrying time.
  • Material volume: Approximately six cubic yards needed to be loaded and disposed of.
  • Material type: The load consisted mostly of lighter, nonhazardous material.
  • Labor requirements: Everything could be handled safely by one person without an additional worker.
  • Hauling and disposal: The quote accounted for three trailer loads and the associated disposal costs.

This is an example of what one completed cleanout cost, not a flat price for every garage. A similar-looking pile could require more labor if it is difficult to reach, unusually heavy, or made up of material with different disposal requirements.

For a fuller explanation of how access, material volume, labor, and disposal affect a quote, read our guide to how garage cleanouts are priced.

The Result: A Usable Garage Again

Once the unwanted items were hauled away, we cleared the remaining loose dust, leaves, and debris from the garage floor.

The homeowner’s lawn and garden supplies stayed, while the renovation leftovers and unwanted stored items were gone. Instead of working around piles of boxes and scraps, she could use the garage again.

She was pleased with the quick turnaround and satisfied with the finished cleanout. From Monday’s quote to Thursday’s completion, the project helped a repeat client finish dealing with the aftermath of her renovations.

A homeowner in Mentor had an exterior light above their screened porch door that wasn’t working. Initially, the plan was to change the bulb, much like the floodlight bulbs I was replacing elsewhere at the same house.

Once I looked at the fixture, though, I found heavily rusted hardware. I wasn’t confident that I could get it apart to reach the bulb and then put it back together reliably.

Rather than spend time fighting the old fixture, I recommended replacing it. A new light cost about $30, making replacement the more sensible use of the homeowner’s time and money.

Why Replace the Fixture Instead of Just the Bulb?

Sometimes a burnt-out bulb is a quick fix. Other times, the condition of the fixture makes getting to that bulb more work than it’s worth.

Here, the concern was the rusted screws. Even if I managed to remove them, there was a question of whether the old fixture would go back together properly. Spending time working around that deterioration didn’t make much sense when an inexpensive replacement was available.

The homeowner agreed, and I picked up the new fixture during the same store trip as the downspout materials and replacement floodlight bulbs.

Installing the New Light Above the Porch Door

Removing the old fixture and installing the replacement went smoothly. There were no additional wiring or mounting issues to address, and the new light fit neatly above the door.

Once installed, it provided much brighter light at the entrance. The replacement also has an integrated LED rather than a separate bulb to change.

Straightforward light fixture replacements generally take me about 30 minutes to an hour per fixture. The time can increase if removing the old light reveals problems with the wiring, mounting, or supports, but none of those complications came up on this job.

One Part of a Full Day Helper Visit

This light replacement was part of a Full Day Helper appointment at the same Mentor home where I installed a gutter downspout and replaced two exterior floodlight bulbs.

Grouping the work made practical sense. I already had tools and a ladder on-site, and I could pick up the materials for several tasks during one store trip.

It also meant the homeowner could work through a list of things that weren’t functioning properly without arranging a separate visit for each one. The floodlights needed bulbs; the porch light made more sense to replace. Each task got the approach that suited its condition.

How Much Does an Exterior Light Fixture Replacement Cost?

A straightforward standalone light fixture replacement starts at $125 plus parts.

That assumes the existing wiring and mounting are suitable for installing the replacement. If taking down the old fixture reveals a need for new supports, wiring repairs, or other additional work, the price can increase.

Fixture replacement can also be included in a Half Day Helper or Full Day Helper appointment. If you have several small projects waiting, grouping them into one visit may offer better value than booking each separately.

For this Mentor project, the replacement fixture was approximately $30, and the installation was handled as part of the day’s larger task list.

Getting a Nonworking Exterior Light Taken Care Of

This job started with a light that needed attention, not a homeowner looking for a major upgrade. After checking its condition, replacing the fixture was a more practical choice than spending time trying to preserve the old one.

If you have a nonworking porch or exterior light in Mentor, send Colin Can Help a photo of the fixture and describe what’s happening. Include any other tasks you’d like handled so we can figure out whether a standalone appointment or a helper plan makes more sense.

While I was at a Mentor home installing a gutter downspout, the homeowner mentioned another item on their list: an exterior light that hadn’t worked since they moved in.

They weren’t sure whether it needed a bulb or a new fixture. The lights were about 10 feet up, they didn’t have a ladder, and they weren’t comfortable with heights. Since I already had a ladder there for the gutter work, it made sense to take a look.

It turned out to be a straightforward fix. I picked up replacement bulbs, changed both, and the lights worked immediately. No fixture replacement or other repairs were needed.

Finding Replacement Bulbs

I removed one of the old bulbs and took it with me while picking up parts for the downspout installation. That gave me something to match at the store rather than guessing which replacement to buy.

The exterior floodlight bulbs came in a two-pack. I recommended replacing both while I was there so the brightness would match and the older bulb wouldn’t be left as another potential reason for a ladder visit.

Once the new bulbs were installed, both lights came on without any trouble. Getting the replacements took longer than installing them.

A Small Task That Made Sense to Add to the Visit

Changing two light bulbs isn’t a big project, but getting to them was the obstacle for this homeowner. They also didn’t know whether buying bulbs would solve the problem.

In this case, I already had the ladder on-site and was heading to the store for materials. Adding the lights to our to-do list meant the homeowner could get another issue handled without arranging a separate appointment.

The photo shows the lights working after the replacement. Something that hadn’t worked since move-in was finally checked off the list.

How Much Does Exterior Light Bulb Replacement Cost?

For a standalone visit, a task like this would be $125 plus the cost of the bulbs, assuming a similarly straightforward replacement. If the fixture still doesn’t work with new bulbs or the access is different, that becomes a different scope of work.

A separate visit isn’t always the best value for two bulbs, though. If you have several small things that need attention, a Half Day Helper or Whole Day Helper appointment may make more sense.

Grouping tasks gives us a chance to handle more of your list during the same visit instead of scheduling a separate trip for each item. That’s especially useful for the little jobs that keep getting put off because you don’t have the ladder, tools, time, or desire to tackle them yourself.

Getting Help With Hard-to-Reach Lights in Mentor

This Mentor project didn’t need a new light fixture. It needed matching replacement bulbs and someone comfortable getting up a ladder to install them.

If you have an exterior light that needs attention, send Colin Can Help a photo of the fixture and an estimate of its height. Let me know whether it’s the only task or part of a longer list so we can figure out a sensible way to handle the visit.
