Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about painting, handyman work, landscaping, pricing, scheduling, or whether your project is the right fit? This page gives quick answers about how Colin Can Help works and how to get started in Northeast Ohio.

General Questions

If you are wondering whether we do that, how this works, or what it might cost, this is the place to start.
What is Colin Can Help?

Colin Can Help is my Northeast Ohio home services business. I started out just mowing lawns, then clients began asking if I could clean up flower beds, handle small repairs, and help with the kinds of projects that never seem big enough for a full crew to care about.

Over and over, I heard the same thing: people were struggling to get anyone to take smaller gigs seriously, even show up for a quote, or charge a fair price for the work. A lot of companies do not really want the small to medium-sized jobs, and homeowners can feel that pretty quickly.

I kept adding services where I saw people being overcharged, under-served, or flat out ignored, and that turned into a one-stop home services shop where you have one guy you can call for just about everything that does not need a huge crew.

If something is outside my scope or truly needs a larger specialty team, I will tell you that honestly and point you toward someone better suited for it.

What services does Colin Can Help offer?

The simplest way to explain it is that I do cosmetics and maintenance, not major structural work.

In everyday terms, that means I help with the projects that make your home look better, feel better to live in, and stay in good shape over time, but I’m rarely the right person for things like foundation work or full-scale mechanical overhauls. Painting walls, ceilings, trim, decks, and fences, repairing drywall, replacing light fixtures and fans, installing bathroom hardware, refreshing flower beds, mulching, trimming, weeding, and general outdoor cleanups all fall into my lane.

If a project is about how a space looks, functions day-to-day, or holds up, there’s a good chance I can help.

What kinds of projects are the best fit?

Most of my customers fall into three groups: people who just bought a house, people who are getting ready to sell, and people who live busy lives and need steady help around the house. If you’ve just moved in, I’m a good fit for things like painting key rooms, fixing drywall and trim, installing lights and bathroom hardware, and getting the yard and beds under control so the place feels like home. If you’re selling, I can help with point‑of‑sale repairs, cosmetic cleanups, curb appeal, and the kind of paint and maintenance work that makes photos and showings look better. If you’re simply busy, I’m a strong fit for half‑day and full‑day helper gigs where we knock out a list of projects in one focused visit. My sweet spot is jobs that are roughly a half day, a full day, or up to about a week for bigger work like full interior repaints, not multi‑month remodels.

What areas do you serve?

I’m happy to travel if the job makes sense, but I’m usually working in Euclid, Cleveland’s east side suburbs, and nearby parts of Cuyahoga and Lake County. A lot of my work comes from places like Euclid, South Euclid, Cleveland Heights, University Heights, Shaker Heights, Mayfield Heights, Lyndhurst, Richmond Heights, Highland Heights, Mentor, Willoughby, Eastlake, and surrounding communities. If you are not sure whether you are in my service area, just text me your city or address along with a few project details and I can let you know pretty quickly.

How soon can I schedule a project?

It depends on the season and the type of work, but in general I am usually booking about 3 to 4 weeks out in the spring and summer and around 2 to 3 weeks out in the colder months. Interior work tends to stay steadier year-round, while outdoor work can move around more depending on weather and how the schedule shifts from week to week. If you are on a tighter deadline, especially for something like getting a house ready to sell or handling an urgent repair, tell me that up front and I will do my best to fit it in or at least help you figure out the fastest next step. The easiest way to get on the schedule is to text me a few photos or a short video, your location, and what you want done so I can quickly tell you whether it is a good fit and what availability looks like.

Pricing, Payment, and Expectations

How do quotes and estimates work with Colin Can Help?

The easiest way to get things started is to send a text about what you need, where you are located, and a photo or short video of the area you want help with. That gives me enough context to understand the problem, see access and surroundings, and start thinking through options without making you wait on a voicemail callback.

From there, we will trade a few texts to clarify the scope and your priorities so I can give you a realistic ballpark of what the project might cost. If that range feels right and the job looks like a good fit, we will decide whether it makes sense to meet on site for a walkthrough to confirm everything in person.

Once I have a full understanding of the scope, either from detailed photos and video or from seeing it in person, I will write up a clear estimate for you to review and approve. That estimate lays out the work, pricing, and any next steps, and once you approve it we can get your project on the schedule and get things started.

How do you price jobs?

It really depends on the type of job. Because I help with so many different things, from small handyman fixes to larger painting and landscape projects, a blanket price for everything does not make sense or feel fair.

For most work, I look at what needs to be done, how long it will realistically take, what materials are involved, and how much planning or setup is required. That lets me give you a price that reflects the actual project instead of just throwing an hourly number at you and hoping it all works out.

To keep things as low cost and high value as possible, I use a mix of approaches. For longer or mixed project days, I often recommend my half day and whole day helper options, where you get a set block of time focused on your list. For very small or clearly defined jobs, like swapping a light fixture or installing a single item, I use individual flat prices so you know exactly what you are paying for up front.

The goal is simple pricing that fits the job. If you ever want to know why something is priced the way it is, I am happy to walk you through it before we get started.

Can I provide my own materials, or do you supply them?

You can provide your own materials, but in most cases it makes more sense for me to pick things up. I know what tends to work best, what fits your project, and where to find it, which usually keeps the job smoother and more cost‑effective overall.

There are a few exceptions. For flowers and plants, I often encourage people to go pick out what they like and place them roughly where they would like them when I come to renovate a flower bed. That way you get the exact look you want and I can focus on the layout, planting, and finishing work.

I am not against installing something you ordered from Amazon or picked up elsewhere, but I can only fully guarantee the work when I provide the materials and can vouch for the full chain from product choice to installation. A lot of times it seems cheaper for a customer to buy their own materials, and technically it can be, but if the wrong items show up and I have to make an extra trip to the store, the job often ends up costing more than if I had sourced everything from the start.

So the short version is yes, you can in some cases, but usually it is best if you just let me bring what the job needs so we get it right the first time.

What payments do you accept?

I use the Square platform for most payments, which gives you a lot of flexibility in how you pay. Through Square you can pay by credit card, debit card, bank transfer, and digital wallets like Apple Pay.

I also accept cash and checks, but credit card is preferred because it keeps everything fast and documented for both of us. On site, we can take tap‑to‑pay cards and phones, or I can send you an invoice where you enter your payment details securely from your phone or computer.

For repeat customers, you can also leave a card on file so future visits are even easier. That way we can focus on the work instead of chasing payment details every time.

Do I need to make a deposit?

Deposits are handled on a case by case basis. Whether you need one depends mostly on the size of the job and whether it is all labor or if we need to purchase materials as part of the project.

For smaller, straightforward visits that are mostly labor, we may not require a deposit and can simply take payment when the work is finished. For larger projects or jobs that involve significant materials, a deposit helps cover those upfront costs and holds your spot on the schedule, with the deposit applied directly to your final invoice.

If you ever have a question about whether a deposit will be required, just ask when we are going over your quote and I will explain exactly what is needed and why for that particular job.

What happens if the scope changes, we add extra work, or need to cancel or reschedule?

If we get into a project and uncover other things that really should be addressed, I will let you know and walk you through what I am seeing. From there, you decide how to proceed. If you want to add extra work while I am already on site, sometimes we can take care of it right then depending on the schedule, and other times it makes more sense to come back for a dedicated visit.

Either way, any extra work needs to be priced out and approved before we do it. I will explain what is involved, give you updated pricing for the added scope, and get your okay so you are never surprised by a bigger bill at the end.

If you need to cancel or reschedule, deposits are non refundable because they reserve time and planning for your job, but we will do our best to reschedule you as soon as possible. The more notice you can give, the easier it is to shift your spot to a new date without disrupting other projects.

Painting Questions

Do you offer interior painting, exterior painting, or both?
I offer both interior and exterior painting, but I stay in the lane where a one‑man setup makes sense. Inside, that usually means painting walls, ceilings, trim, doors, and high‑impact rooms like living spaces, hallways, and bathrooms, often with some drywall repair and prep built in. Outside, I focus on garages, sheds, decks, fences, and smaller exterior areas instead of full house exteriors, because I only take on projects I can safely reach with about a 15‑foot ladder. If something needs more height or a full exterior crew, I’m happy to tell you that and help you point the job in the right direction.

Do you handle drywall repair and prep before painting?

Yes. I do not just roll paint over problems and hope for the best. A lot of my painting work includes drywall repair, patching, sanding, and proper primer so the finish actually looks good and holds up. Small‑to‑medium repairs, nail pops, seam cracks, and bubbling or peeling paint are all things I can usually handle as part of the job, as long as the drywall itself is still solid and the underlying issue is under control. If I run into damage that really needs full replacement, major remediation, or a specialist, I’ll tell you that honestly instead of covering it up, and we can talk about the best way to tackle it before paint goes on.

Can you help me choose paint colors and finishes?

Yes. I can definitely help, especially with choosing the right finish and type of paint for each surface so it wears well and cleans up easily in real‑world use. When it comes to color, I’m happy to give input and make simple renderings or mockups using colors you already like, but I always remind people that I only have to look at the color for a day or two, while you’ll be living with it for a long time. The same color can look very different on your walls than it does on a swatch or screen because of your lighting, existing floors, and other finishes, so I treat color suggestions as guidance, not a hard rule, and encourage you to test samples before we commit.

How long does a typical paint job take?

It depends on the size of the project, how much prep and drywall repair is needed, and whether you’re having one room done or a whole set of spaces. A single room with normal prep is usually a one‑day job for me, while multi‑room projects or homes that need more repair and detail work can stretch into several long days or up to a week. Bigger full‑interior repaints are more like a one‑ to two‑week project, especially if we’re doing drywall fixes, primer, and multiple coats to get everything looking clean and move‑in ready.

When you reach out, I’ll look at photos or video of the space, talk through what you want done, and then give you a realistic time window so you can plan around it.

Can I still live in my home while you are painting?

Absolutely. My favorite way to paint is in an empty home before your furniture and belongings move in, because it’s faster, cleaner, and there’s less to protect. But if you’re already moved in, we can still get the job done without turning your place upside down. I’ll help protect your stuff with drop cloths, plastic, and careful setup so walls, ceilings, and trim get painted while your furniture, floors, and personal items stay safe and covered. We’ll work one area at a time, keep clear walkways, and talk through which rooms need to stay usable so the project fits how you actually live.

What should I do before painting day?
Cleaning is huge. The less dust, smoke residue, hair, and general debris on your walls, floors, and in the air, the better the paint will stick and the nicer the finish will look. A quick wipe‑down of walls, a good vacuum, and clearing off surfaces in the rooms we’re painting goes a long way.

It also really helps to move fragile or valuable items out of the rooms we’ll be working in and to pull small stuff off shelves, dressers, and counters so we’re not working around breakables all day. I’ll handle a lot of the prep once I arrive, but having clear access to walls, ceilings, and trim lets us get straight to work instead of playing “careful Tetris” with your belongings.

If you’ve got pets, especially friendly dogs, it’s best to keep them out of the work areas. I love dogs, but I don’t want your chocolate lab to end up looking like an Oreo because they brushed up against a freshly painted wall. Keeping animals and kids away from the active rooms keeps them safe, keeps fur out of the paint, and helps the job move faster.

Handyman Questions

What kinds of handyman jobs can Colin Can Help take care of?

Colin Can Help handles a wide range of everyday home repair and improvement tasks so you do not have to juggle multiple contractors for small jobs. Typical handyman work includes things like swapping light fixtures, installing or replacing ceiling fans, hanging blinds and curtains, mounting TVs and shelves, installing bathroom hardware, and taking care of “honey‑do list” items around the house.

Beyond fixtures and hardware, I can help with minor plumbing tasks such as toilet repairs and replacements, faucet and supply line work, and basic shut‑off valve upgrades, as well as small drywall repairs, smoke and carbon monoxide detector installs, and general maintenance and punch‑list items before a sale or after an inspection. If you are not sure whether something falls under handyman work or needs a different type of contractor, you can always send a text with photos and I will let you know if it is a good fit or point you in the right direction.

What types of jobs are not a good fit for Colin Can Help?

Colin Can Help is set up for everyday home repairs, improvements, and maintenance, not for major structural or heavy trade work. I do not take on roofing, HVAC, or large‑scale electrical projects, and I stay away from big plumbing re‑pipes, foundation work, or anything that clearly needs permits and a dedicated crew.

I am also not the right fit for full‑scale renovations, additions, or projects where a general contractor needs to coordinate multiple trades over weeks or months. If your job involves structural changes, major system upgrades, or insurance and permit requirements, I will let you know up front and, when I can, point you toward specialists who handle that kind of work every day.

Are you insured, and what does that mean for my project?

Yes, I carry insurance for my handyman and home services work. I have been in business for about 20 years, have always kept proper insurance in place, and have never had to file a claim, which pretty much makes me the insurance company’s best customer. That track record comes from taking safety, prep, and careful work seriously on every job.

For you, being insured mainly means two things. First, if there is accidental damage to your property or someone is injured while I am working, there is a proper process and coverage to help make it right instead of everything falling back on you. Second, it shows that I treat this as a real, long‑term business and invest in protecting both my customers and my own work, not just show up with tools and hope for the best.

If you ever want specifics about coverage or need proof of insurance for your records, just ask and I can provide documentation before we start your project. Many homeowners and property managers do this as part of their own risk management, and I am happy to support that.

Do you handle emergency repairs, or is your work scheduled in advance?

Most of my work is scheduled in advance, and because of the scope of what true emergency repairs often involve, I am not always the best first call for major emergencies. For example, if pipes are leaking behind walls or you have a large, active plumbing or electrical failure, you will usually be better served by a dedicated emergency plumber or electrician who can bring a full crew and specialized equipment.

That said, if you have a smaller emergency that you can see and safely reach, like a leaking toilet or a shut‑off valve that will not behave, I can often help. In many cases I can talk you through how to contain the situation over the phone, show you how to shut off water, and as long as you do not mind a later visit, get over there as soon as the work already scheduled for that day is finished.

So while I am not a 24/7 emergency company, I will always try to help you stabilize the issue and, when it is a good fit, work you into the schedule as quickly as possible.

Do I need to be home while you are working, and how do you handle access to the property?

You do not have to be home while I am working as long as I can get in and we have a firm grasp on what needs to be done. If we have already talked through the scope, reviewed photos or video, and agreed on the plan, I am happy to come in, get the work done, clean up, and lock up on my way out.

If you prefer to be home, I completely understand that too. In that case, we will try to schedule your visit for a time that fits your day as best we can, so you can be on site to ask questions, see progress, and walk the finished work before I leave.

What do you need from me before a handyman visit so things go smoothly?

The main thing I need is good information. Before a visit, it helps a lot if you can tell me what is going on, how long it has been going on, and how you would like it to be going forward. When I understand both the problem and your ideal outcome, I can either get you all the way there, get you close with a smart repair, or recommend someone else if a different type of specialist would serve you better.

For indoor work, especially bathroom repairs and anything in tighter spaces, it is always appreciated if the area is reasonably clean and cleared of personal items. Moving toiletries, décor, and small objects out of the way and giving me clear access to the work zone makes it safer and faster to work, and keeps your things from getting dusty, dirty, or accidentally splashed while we fix the issue.

Landscape Questions

What kinds of landscaping jobs are the best fit for you?

I’m at my best on the “where do I even start?” yards… the overgrown, forgotten‑about beds and corners that have gotten away from you. I love clearing everything out, cleaning up what’s worth keeping, bringing in a few new showpiece plants, laying fresh mulch, and cutting a clean bed edge so the whole space looks intentional again. Whether you’re getting ready to sell a home or just finally want to enjoy your yard instead of ignoring it, those transformation jobs are my favorite.colincanhelp+3

I’m not the right fit for big excavations, full driveway installs, or major hardscape rebuilds, but if you’ve got beds, bushes, mulch, and general outdoor maintenance that needs real attention and a fresh look, that’s exactly the kind of landscaping work I like to take on.

Do you do spring and fall cleanups?
Yes, I handle just about every type of yard cleanup. Everyone has a slightly different idea of what “spring cleanup” or “fall cleanup” means at their house, so I like to listen first: sticks, acorns, leaves, weeds, overgrown beds, rough lawn edges, and whatever else is bugging you. From there, I figure out how long it will realistically take and most cleanups end up fitting best into my Half Day or Full Day Helper plans where you get me for a set block of time.

During that time, you can have me pull weeds, clear out leaves and branches, bag debris, touch up bed edges, spread mulch, or mow and tidy the lawn if that is part of the project. It is flexible by design so we can focus on the things that matter most to you and get your yard from “I don’t know where to start” to looking clean and under control again.

Do you install mulch and refresh flower beds?

Yes. I install mulch and refresh flower beds, and I can also bring in topsoil, stone, or other bed materials when it makes sense for drainage and looks. A typical bed refresh for me means clearing out weeds and debris, cutting or sharpening the bed edge, cleaning up existing plants, and then installing a clean layer of mulch or other material at the right depth so it looks good and actually helps the soil.

If you want help keeping beds weeded and under control, we can also treat that as an ongoing maintenance task inside a Half Day or Full Day Helper visit, where you have me focus on pulling weeds, tidying plants, touching up edges, and topping up mulch in the areas that matter most to you.

Do you offer weeding and bed maintenance?

Yes. I offer weeding and flower bed maintenance for homeowners who want their beds to look cared for but do not want to spend every weekend pulling weeds. That can be a one‑time deep clean for neglected beds or ongoing visits to keep things under control through the season.

Most weeding and bed maintenance fits well into my Half Day and Full Day Helper setup. During that time I can hand‑pull weeds, clean out debris, trim back plants that are getting out of bounds, touch up bed edges, and help keep mulch and soil in good shape so new weeds have a harder time coming back. If you want recurring bed maintenance, we can talk about a simple schedule that matches your yard and budget instead of you having to start from scratch every time things get away from you.

Do you trim bushes and shrubs?
Yes. I trim bushes and shrubs, but I do it in a way that respects what each plant actually needs rather than just hacking everything back the same way. Different shrubs have different bloom cycles and growth habits, and trimming at the wrong time or too aggressively can kill next year’s flowers or stress the plant.

When I work on your bushes, I look at the type of shrub and the time of year, then use that to decide whether it is a good moment for shaping, thinning, or just a light touch‑up. Some plants are safest to trim right after they bloom, some prefer late winter or early spring, and some only need occasional shaping to stay healthy and out of your walkways and siding. If you are not sure what you have in your yard, I am happy to help identify it and suggest a trimming plan that keeps your plants looking good and protects their long‑term health.

Do you mow lawns or offer recurring yard maintenance?

Yes, but I focus mostly on the situations where it makes the biggest difference. I do regular mowing and yard maintenance for people who are selling their homes and need the property to look well‑kept for photos, showings, and inspection, and I still take on some full‑season maintenance plans for homeowners who want a reliable local person instead of a big crew.

Plans typically start around $100 per week, with the exact price depending on the size of the yard, how often it needs mowing, and whether we are combining mowing with bed work, trimming, or other outdoor tasks. If you are just looking for help getting a yard back under control or keeping things presentable while a house is on the market, we can usually fit that into a simple recurring schedule or roll it into a Half Day or Full Day Helper plan.

When is the best time to schedule landscaping work?

The more notice, the better. My goal is to help people be proactive instead of reactive so their place always looks good and we are doing things for plants at the times that actually benefit them. Spring and summer tend to book up 3 to 4 weeks out and early spring and early fall are usually the best windows for bigger bed work, edging, and planting because soil is workable and plants are either waking up or winding down.colincanhelp+3

If you have a specific event or holiday in mind, like a graduation party or backyard gathering, it is smart to aim for at least a few weeks of lead time. We can get the main project done in advance, then schedule a quick touch‑up visit right before your date for mowing, edging, leaf cleanup, and other maintenance so last‑minute weather or surprises do not wreck the look of the yard.

Can you help improve curb appeal if I’m getting ready to sell my house?

Yes, I love these kinds of projects. When you are getting ready to sell, my approach is to simplify and declutter so buyers pull up and see a clean, cared‑for yard instead of a weekend of work waiting for them. That usually means trimming back overgrown bushes, refreshing mulch, cutting clean bed edges, and clearing out flower beds so there are no obvious “this needs attention” spots right at the front door.

We focus on the areas buyers really notice: the front walk, around the entry, and the beds that show up in listing photos. I help you decide what to keep, what to remove, and where a few new plants or planters can make the biggest impact without turning into a huge project. If you want help beyond landscaping, I can also coordinate with painting and minor repairs so the outside and inside both feel move‑in ready instead of “one more project.”

Can you help me choose plants that actually do well in Northeast Ohio?

Yes. I can help you choose plants that actually like our Northeast Ohio climate instead of fighting it. I wrote a plant guide called Know the Natives that focuses on native and well‑adapted plants that thrive here, and I use that same approach when we plan your beds or containers so you get plants that look good and survive our seasons.

Whether you want low‑maintenance shrubs, front entrance planters, pollinator‑friendly natives, or just the “usual Cleveland favorites” that are proven in this area, I can walk you through what fits your light, soil, and maintenance level. We can talk through native options from the book, common landscape flowers and shrubs, and even herbs and groundcovers that make your yard feel more local and less generic.
