For this Half Day Helper project in Lakewood, Ohio, the client needed a fast, affordable way to reclaim an overgrown outdoor space at a duplex and knew it was a bit too much for her to handle alone. She contacted Colin Can Help looking for a small, focused package that would clear her patio, refresh the front flower bed, and haul away all the debris so her tenant could enjoy the space again.
Project overview
This Half Day Helper visit was booked as a at a Lakewood duplex. The scope included:
-
Clearing an overgrown patio area.
-
Trimming bushes and removing vines.
-
Weeding and mulching a front landscape bed.
-
Hauling away yard waste, debris, and old lumber.
The client was able to skip an in-person quote by sending detailed photos, short videos, and estimated measurements of the patio and flower bed. That information was enough for me to estimate the time required, confirm it would fit in a Half Day Helper, and lock in the project without a second trip across town. While everyone will tell you they offer “free quotes”, the costs to the company to provide those on site look overs are included in the overall cost of your project.
What I found and fixed
When I arrived, the patio and surrounding area were heavily overgrown with poison ivy, grape vines, and aggressive weeds that had crept into the hardscape and around stored materials. As I cleared the growth, I uncovered:
-
A large pile of discarded lumber stacked on the porch.
-
Multiple pieces of wood suitable for patio firewood.
-
Hidden debris and materials that had been buried under the vines and weeds.
All invasive growth was cut back and removed, including poison ivy and grape vines growing through the patio and into stored materials. The usable firewood was stacked for the client to use for future patio fires, while the broken and unusable lumber was hauled away with the rest of the debris.

Front bed refresh with black mulch
The front flower bed was full of weeds and starting to look tired compared to the rest of the property. After hand-weeding and cleaning up the bed, I installed one yard of black mulch from Highland Landscape Supply to give the front entry a clean, sharp look and help suppress future weed growth.
The fresh black mulch instantly made the bed look brand new and helped tie the curb appeal together for both the owner and the tenant. Because the Half Day Helper is time-boxed, we were able to prioritize the highest-impact areas and still finish with just enough mulch to fully cover the front bed.
Results: 4 hours, transformed outdoor space
Everything was completed within the 4-hour Half Day Helper window, including debris removal and mulching. The patio area was cleared, vines and weeds were removed, lumber sorted and hauled, and the front bed was fully weeded and mulched with just the right amount of black mulch.
The client and her tenant gained:
-
A clean, usable patio space.
-
A refreshed front flower bed with professional-looking mulch.
-
Reduced safety risks from poison ivy and hidden debris.
-
Better curb appeal and a more inviting outdoor area at the duplex.
On the way back to the east side, I even got a surprise dinner stop at Carter’s BBQ Food Truck at the Lakewood Truck Park, which is always a great bonus after a productive half day in Lakewood.
Why this was perfect for Half Day Helper
This project is a great example of what can be accomplished with a Half Day Helper package:
-
A focused 3–4 hour block is ideal for small to medium outdoor cleanups, weed and vine removal, and a single bed refresh.
-
Remote quoting via photos, videos, and measurements keeps travel time down and makes scheduling faster.
-
Text-based communication lets us quickly prioritize tasks so we can hit the high-impact areas first.
If you have an overgrown patio, a tired flower bed, or a small yard clean-up in Lakewood or greater Northeast Ohio, the Half Day Helper is designed to deliver visible results in one visit.
