This project involved installing a brand-new waterproof luxury vinyl plank (LVP) floor in a 250 sq. ft. kitchen. The space had four doorways that required precise cutting, along with a few underlying subfloor challenges that needed to be addressed before installation. The finished floor features Sparta Mound Maple 22 mil Click Lock Waterproof LVP Flooring from Home Depot, a durable and stylish upgrade chosen to handle the demands of a busy kitchen.
The homeowner originally selected another flooring type that wasn’t waterproof and had a cardboard-based core. We explained that in a kitchen, where spills and moisture are common, waterproof flooring is the smarter long-term choice. The Sparta Mound Maple LVP offered not only waterproof protection but also a more rigid, click-lock construction that made installation smoother and the final product more reliable.
Preparation is half the battle in a flooring project, and this job required significant attention before the first plank could be laid:
Old Floor Removal: The existing kitchen had a couple of layers of laminate flooring that had to be carefully scraped away.
Subfloor Repairs: We added missing pieces of wood to the subfloor to ensure a strong, even base.
Leveling: A small dip in the floor required a leveling patch to prevent future gaps or movement in the planks.
All told, the prep work took a full day but set the foundation for a smooth installation.
With the subfloor ready, two installers spent about a day and a half completing the project:
Carefully cutting planks around four different doorways.
Laying down the 22 mil click-lock planks for a tight, seamless fit.
Using Performance Accessories Sol Vinyl 4-in-1 Molding for clean and durable transitions into the surrounding rooms.
Cleaning the workspace thoroughly.
Hauling away all old flooring and jobsite debris.
The new floor transformed the kitchen — not only in appearance, but also in durability. Compared to the original laminate option, the waterproof LVP will handle spills, foot traffic, and everyday kitchen activity much better. The Sparta Mound Maple finish provided a warm, modern look that tied the whole room together, while the 4-in-1 molding gave the transitions a polished, professional finish.
This project highlights how proper prep, the right product selection, and attention to detail make a big difference in the long-term success of a flooring installation.
