This project involved installing a brand-new waterproof luxury vinyl plank (LVP) floor in a 250 sq. ft. kitchen. The space had four doorways that required precise cutting, along with a few underlying subfloor challenges that needed to be addressed before installation. The finished floor features Sparta Mound Maple 22 mil Click Lock Waterproof LVP Flooring from Home Depot, a durable and stylish upgrade chosen to handle the demands of a busy kitchen.
The homeowner originally selected another flooring type that wasn’t waterproof and had a cardboard-based core. We explained that in a kitchen, where spills and moisture are common, waterproof flooring is the smarter long-term choice. The Sparta Mound Maple LVP offered not only waterproof protection but also a more rigid, click-lock construction that made installation smoother and the final product more reliable.
Preparation is half the battle in a flooring project, and this job required significant attention before the first plank could be laid:
Old Floor Removal: The existing kitchen had a couple of layers of laminate flooring that had to be carefully scraped away.
Subfloor Repairs: We added missing pieces of wood to the subfloor to ensure a strong, even base.
Leveling: A small dip in the floor required a leveling patch to prevent future gaps or movement in the planks.
All told, the prep work took a full day but set the foundation for a smooth installation.
With the subfloor ready, two installers spent about a day and a half completing the project:
Carefully cutting planks around four different doorways.
