You’re selling your music the wrong way…

Why are you relying on Spotify, Apple Music, and all of the other streaming services? Is that helping your music career? Do you think you need them? I personally think that method of getting your music out there is selling your music the wrong way.

Spotify reports that it pays out between $0.00331 and $0.00437 per stream to rights holders and the other major platforms are all in that range.

If you are splitting royalties with a producer or other artists, you are taking home a fraction of the original fraction.

Simply put, in the best-case scenario, to make a dollar you need to get about 1,500 streams.

To be fair, you will bring home more money if people buy the song or album instead of streaming. The music platform is still going to take a third or more of that money as well.

Unfortunately, artists are conditioned to the rhetoric of the music industry to think that they need them for distribution. Now that I am about done telling you about how I think streaming and hosting your music elsewhere is the wrong way to sell your music, let me give you my ideas on how to better sell your art.

Do it all yourself!

Anybody who isn’t very passionate about making their music more successful has already left the page, so let’s get real. Fuck Apple and Spotify. You have been helping them keep people on their apps and they have been giving you insulting compensation.

You are already doing most of the work yourself, have you realized that? How many times have you advertised for music streaming services in the last week? Tell any of your followers to check out a song on Spotify or Apple? Spent any time putting their links in your bio? Instead of typing “” why not “”.

What I am saying is you need to have a website and or app of your own that can be the only place that you send people to.

On that site/app, all of your music can be played, people can download your music, see your videos, etc. You control how much things cost, how they are sold and can gather a lot more information.

Getting your website

Websites are your way to control your narrative and user/fan experience. To have a website you need three things:

  • Domain Name
  • Hosting
  • Content

A domain name is also known as a URL. It is what you type into the internet browser to pull up your site. You want to make it simple, easy to type, and matching your social media handles. Your name is ideal ( This is something

Let Facebook Work For You

Facebook has an amazing tool called Facebook Pixel. It is a code that you place on your website that collects data that helps you track conversions from Facebook ads, optimize ads, build targeted audiences for future ads, and remarket to people who have already taken some kind of action on your website.

By having the code installed on your site and running even a dollar a day of ads for Facebook or Instagram, you are making a smarter code that will make smarter ads for you.
