The Colin Can HelpPlant Guide

Pre Planting Checklist

Without a plan and a good foundation, you will waste time, money, and think you aren't meant for gardening. Before you start your plant journey, complete your Pre Planting Checklist.
Know Your Hardiness Zone
Knowing your zone is the key to choosing plants that can survive where you live. All seed packages and most potted plants for sale will have the zones they are able to grow in on the label. If you are in Ohio, most of Ohio is in Zone 6A or Zone 5B.

Know Your Time Limitations
Some plants are a lot of work while some thrive from neglect. It is important to know how much time you have to allocate to tending to your plants.
It is also important to keep an eye on the calendar too. There are a few key times of the year to plant, fertilize, prune, and harvest plants. Making sure you plan when to plant will help a lot.
Know What You Want To Achieve
Having a vision for your garden is important. If you want to continually add to it, you need to leave space for new plants.
If you want things to always be in bloom, you have to plan out when things flower and pair many things together.
Making sure you have a sound vision in the beginning will save you time, money, and wasted plants.
Know Your Soil
There are a lot of different types of soil depending on where you live. While some plants can grow in concrete, others need a very specific growing medium to thrive. Know what type of soil you have and tend it to your needs.
Identify Predators
I get asked all the time, “What will deer not eat?”. There is nothing worse than having your garden destroyed overnight by deer, rabbits, slugs, bugs, and birds. If you know these things are in your area, a fence or other protection will be needed before you start planting.
Gather Tools & Supplies
It is always better to have tools on hand to make the job easier. Be sure to have shovels, wheelbarrows, rakes, tillers, sheers, and other equipment to aid you in your gardening efforts.
Study the Sun
Knowing when areas get sun and shade is important to their success. Before you plant, be sure to know how many hours of sun an area gets and what hours those are.
Pick Out Your Plants
Once you have all those things figured out and in place, it’s time to get plants! Are you going to start off with seeds or already developed plants?
