So L.Salt, let’s start by telling me a bit about yourself. Where are you from?
Valeriya SaltHi, Colin:) I was born in Belarus and have lived for many years in Ukraine and Russia, then finally settled down in the North of England, where I currently live with my husband.
What sparked the move from Russia to England?
Valeriya SaltIt was a family reason. I’ve married an English man 🙂
What was the biggest adjustment for you moving to a different country?
Valeriya SaltI’d say traditions…I’ve found UK a bit old-fashioned which sometimes is not a bad thing…
Agreed. So have you been writing your entire life ? When did you decide to go all in and become an author?
Valeriya SaltMy interest in writing dates back to my teenage years. I started to write sci-fi short stories when I was about 12-13, then I had a massive gap (about 10 years) when I didn’t write anything. My relocation to the UK has inspired me to start to write again…this time, in English 🙂
Thats exciting. Are you still focusing on sci-fi?
Valeriya SaltNot really. At the moment, I’m experimenting with different genres. I’ve written two thrillers novellas with some historical references, a futuristic urban drama novel, a sci-fi short story, a speculative history story…
Wow, you stay busy! Are you self publishing these or do you have a publisher?

Valeriya SaltCurrently, I’m working with two indie publishers. My two novellas have been published by an amazing Americal house “Crazy Ink Publication”, my debut novel has been released by an Australian publisher “Wild Dreams Publishing”. It’s a pleasure to work with both of them.
What made you decide to go the publisher route? I often hear that you give up control but also tend to get more sales that way.
Valeriya Salt As an unexperienced author, I’ve decided to try a traditional or a semi-traditional (indie publisher) route. To me, it is an easier way to get my books to the public, because the publishers take care of promotion and building authors’ brand. They also provide editing, proofreading, covers, graphics, book’s trailers, and other promo material. So the author can focus more on actual writing.
So you figure, you know how to write, let the people who know how to market and sell, do their thing? Nothing wrong with doubling down on your specialties! How did you find the publishers you are working with, or did they find you?
Valeriya SaltI’ve been looking for a publisher for my debut novel for almost a year.. I’ve found it accidentally via FB. The same has happened to my first novella…I’ve found the publisher via one of the authors who’s my friend on FB.

Why not work with the same one for both projects?

Valeriya Salt The first project had some problems and them it slowed down a bit, so I was not sure whether my book would be published with the first publisher. Sometimes it happens in publishing business…
Makes sense. So you mentioned you lucked out with Facebook groups finding connections. What other websites, apps, or digital tools do you use to help you with your craft?
Valeriya SaltI also use wordpress.com for my blog (although I don’t blog very often). I’ve started to use Pinterest recently. I have my author’s account on Amazon and Goodreads.
When you write, do you do it old school, pen and paper, use your phone, laptop, etc
Valeriya SaltFor actual writing, I use my laptop only. However, I use old school pen and notebook for ideas and plotting.
Nice! So a few last questions to wrap up… In the spirit of Colin Can Help, I always like to ask, what is something you could use more help or more knowledge on.
Valeriya SaltI need to promote my books and to find them good and loyal readers, so I definitely need knowledge on this 🙂
And on the flip side of that question, what is something that you are an expert on that people could reach out to you with help on?
Valeriya Salt I have some knowledge in history, arts, and history of arts as I am a qualified Art Expert and also a history enthusiast 🙂 So, if somebody wants to write something historical, I can be his/her consultant…
And to end the interview I always like to give you a “Digital Soapbox” This is your chance to leave the readers with whatever it is you want. You can plug a project, leave inspiration, or whatever you like! I thank you for your time and look forward to doing this again in the future!
Valeriya Salt Thank you very much, Colin, for inviting me for this interview. I hope your followers will like it 🙂
I want to invite everybody to visit my FB page to learn more about me, my recent and upcoming projects, my inspiration and ideas for my books. Thank you.
